Did you know that hearing loss is linked with the body’s overall balance?

If you have ever experienced Vertigo, you know that it is a disorienting sensation of dizziness. You may have learned that it originates in the inner ear and has to do with the fluids there.

The body’s balance system, called the Vestibular system, is the way the body we orient ourselves and stay upright. Our ears, which are a part of our sensory system, contribute to our body’s equilibrium and balance. Our sensory organs, our ears and our eyes, are what communicate our environment to our brains, so this makes sense.

Research has shown that the fluid in our inner ears is often affected hearing loss. That’s why balance issues can sometimes accompany hearing loss.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce the risk of balance issues.

Move your body! Regular exercise gets your blood circulating, which can contribute to overall balance and helps to regulate all of the body’s systems, including inner ear fluid.

Medicine can make you dizzy! Listen to your body—if you feel dizzy when you take a medicine (prescription strength or over the counter), check into other options.

Get your ears checked! An annual hearing evaluation is always a good idea, because if can let you know if there is an imperceptible change in your hearing since your last screening. Once you are aware of your hearing situation you can take steps it to prevent its progression.

Don’t forget your eyes! Getting your vision checked regularly is just as important as your ears! Declining vision may also affect balance or even result in a fall.

Overall health is key! Everything in our bodies is connected to everything else, and one issue often leads to another. Your hearing health is a vital component of your whole body’s health!

The first step to halting hearing loss and preventing further damage is to recognize your situation. Come in today for a hearing screening and formulate a strategy to train your brain to listen actively and effectively. .
